Erm...well it's rather impractical if you think about the current population - I think that the point was that it is impractical nowadays. Probably wasn't so in the ancient Greece. Or maybe if you shattered all nations into anarchist collectives...
Although it is somewhat debatable if it even was a "true" democracy as only free adult males were eligible to vote.
