Interesting, highthief, because my wife and I are very much against nicknames. We feel that if you, for example, want to call your daughter Katie, you should just name her Katie. Why bother with Katherine if that name will only be used on formal documents and the like? (Of course you should do what YOU want, because the worst thing to do is base your decision about YOUR kid's name on what anyone but you and your S.O. want).
My wife and I like names that are unique. This doesn't mean weird spellings of common names (like Genipher or Rebekah). We both are first generation Americans, so our heritage is important to us. Our daughter has a Dutch name, as my father is from Holland. My wife's family if from Cuba and Colombia, so perhaps we'll go with a hispanic name for our second child.
