Well if annexation were of interest to the U.S, which I can't think why it wouldn't be, I would say B.C (direct link to Alaska) and the maritime provinces to shore up the border protecting all of N. America.
If Ontario, Alberta and Quebec were left as trading partners, then the remaining countries (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) could deal with Alberta and Ontario centrally. Broad based U.S investment into Quebec, Ontario and Alberta could guarantee Man. and Sask. would not be left behind. Or cattle and wheat could sustain them as traders to other countries in Canada. Very interesting
EDIT; Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there very stringent cross border trading guidelines between provinces.
