Your skin and mouth are crawling with bacteria.
Some of that bacteria is good, some of it is bad.
Your skin acts as a barrier against the bacteria. Once your skin is cut, the bacteria on your skin or on whatever broke your skin can get inside the barrier.
It doesn't matter if your mouth was sterile: simply breaking the skin can cause an infection, from the bacteria on the skin itself.
