Is this during Spring Break? A lot of hotels got burned by irresponsible Spring Breakers in years past, vandalism, puking in the hallways, etc, generally people acting like they would not act if there was parental supervision. Being asses.
I am in a hotel pretty much every week, in Chicago, Washington DC, Bethesda, MD, and a few other places. I'm a regular at many of those places (and well over the age of 18), so I am not asked for ID. When I stay at a new hotel, I am always asked for ID, and I am not a partier. Especially if you have booked the hotel thru Expedia, Hotels.com, or of the discounters.
That being said, they only check IDs for the person who's name the room is reserved. So if the 17 year old is sharing a room with the 20 year old, you don't have a problem.
The hotel I was in Chicago recently, that was overrun by immature young adults, were asked to vacate the premisis, so hotels do reserve the right to kick your butts out if you do act up, (no relay races in the hallway at 3:00am please, no cannonball contests in the lap pool)
Do the underage parents kids know that they are going? If it is a problem, the parent can always call the hotel and accept responsibility, and threaten to maim for life, and child that acts up.
