hmm, i tend to agree with Chrono Trigger being the best choice... but, think about this...

replay value:

You can pick up smb3 at ANY time and just play it. CT, you sort of have to be "in the mood" to play it, or have a specific save game slot for when you just want to pick it up and kill stuff...
