Sounds to me like the issue is with data throughput. You are transferring data at a high rate of speed, this takes a lot from the processor. Are you running an onboard audio card, or an expansion type card.. if your running the expansion card, make sure your CDrom is plugged in via audio cable, and try playing a regular CD in it while you transfer data from HD to HD. If that doesnt distort then the problem is your data transfer is overloading your processor... either get a faster system or just deal with it.
