I've never seen any ATA (parallel or serial) drives push greater than about 40MB/sec read or write. And usually the read is somewhat faster than the write.
SCSI is another story. My Maxtor Atlas 10K IV easily does 65-70MB/sec sustained transfer, both ways.
EDIT: I double checked. It seems my WD1600JB's can actually do about 55MB/sec read, but only about 25MB/sec write. That seems to be the usual ATA behavior.
