I only saw the first installation of the miniseries. Having just come from reading all the Dune books, I was really excited to see it. I watched it with some friends who hadn't read the books, and they were completely lost throughout the first installment. I spent the advert breaks trying to quickly explain to them what was going on. In short, it seems you'd get a reasonable amount of entertainment from the series IF you've already read the books. And then you have to contend with the fact that it isn't perfect.
