Ray Feist's Riftwar series is very good.
Terry Prachett Guards & Witches series are some of the best books around.
The Belgariad by David Eddings well worth a read.
Avoid
Tad Williams & Robert Jordan. Jordans first few books in the Wheel of Time are bloody brilliant, BUT it goes down hill very fast. Someone needs get this guy a good editor , as books 4 onwards should be half the length.
