If i remember right (it's been a while since I've seen the movie), the Kmart point was more about how minors had such ez access to ammunition--that people who couldn't buy cigarettes were free to buy ammo. They weren't asking for Kmart to stop selling ammo--the Kmart people just came up with that to keep from bad publicity. Tell me if I'm remembering wrong.
What sticks out more in my mind is the movie's comparison between the US (a gun-toting gun-loving country) and Canada (another gun-toting gun-loving country). Even though guns are owned by large portions of both nations, the US has a much higher murder by gun rate than canada. That's where I got the 'people kill people' message.
