Its like comparing windows 98 and windows xp. I personally use both the x86 and PPC platform on a regular basis. I own a Macintosh and do not do any graphics work at all. I browse the web, write papers, listen to music, watch DVDs, rip movies and music, chat, etc all the time. I am very satisified with my choice of platforms. Like I said before, if he feels that it is for him, then he should get it. If it is not for him, then he should not get it.

There are also games on Macs. My housemate is constantly playing Halo on his sweet G5.
Also, with OS X I think you can compile and run pretty much any GNU/Linux or BSD package. So there is a lot more to Macs than video and graphics editing etc.
