According to ITmedia, Kutaragi surprised the reporters present by making several cryptic comments after the conference had ended. ITmedia quoted Kutaragi as saying that the PSP "is expected to be used inside the house. No one would walk around while playing games." Though he might have been talking about basic pedestrian safety, his words stood in direct contrast to Sony's PSP presentation at E3, which touted its portability.

i now ask the question....what's the point?
i'm just going to take a quote that i found from someone concerning this and just give him the credit.
Quote:
We have the GCN. The current generation console. So why have the GBA? Well.. for one, it offers us the 2D games that we simply would not be getting on the GCN since console owners expect more from a game than just great gameplay it seems. The bigger point is that it is portable. A system where we can play games when we aren't at home in front of the tv.
So where does the DS fit in? We already have a portable system.. that does things that the GCN cannot.. well the DS offers us two-screens (which is simply put.. something the GBA does not), touchpad, microphone, WiFi.. things we cannot get from either the GCN or the GBA. This really shows how all three pillars are justified their existance simultaneously (although I DO have to wonder what incentive there will be for the GB line to continue its existance when the things that it did offer unique of the main consoles is now covered by the DS plus so much more).
Now.. the PS2 is the current generation console from Sony. With it's graphical capabilities around the range of the PS2, it isn't offering us games we simply could not get with the PS2.. WiFi is different, but going through the network adapter of the PS2 is just as good.. and will be discussed in my next point..
The big thing that could justify the PSP as it's own separate entity is it's portability. With WiFi, you could not only play games on the go, but play online games on the go. However, with the durability we have come to not expect from Sony, coupled in with lower battery life, and the fact that people from the company itself are saying it isn't meant to be played outside the home.. well the portability factor that makes it so individual from the PS2 is completely thrown out the window.
So what do we have? We have a small system that gives us games that we could be playing on our PS2, on a larger screen.. online capabilities that we already have with the PS2.. and the PSP being a system meant for the home, which we already have with the PS2.
I'm not trying to put down the system just to be an ass.. I am just saying that Sony is obviously trying to prey on the handheld market, by forcing you to buy a separate machine so that you could play games which could have just been developed for the PS2 and saved you the extra cash you would have to dish out for the PSP.
There is no reason why any of the games on the PSP couldn't be done on the PS2.
EDIT: That only covered the game aspect of the comparison, so I guess I have a bit more to touch on.
First, the PSP lets you play movies. Not Lord of the Rings/Titanic length movies mind you.. but movies. Now, you have to buy these movies on the new format to watch them on your PSP, have to watch them on a small screen, and going by what the Sony guy said.. watch them at home.
Now let's look at the PS2. It let's you play movies. Lord of the Rings/Titantic length movies no less. You can play the regular dvds that you play in your dvd player already, you get to watch them on whatever sized screen you want, and you watch them at home.
The movie aspect of the PSP just seems useless to me. It really isn't a real selling point of the system.
Now.. MP3s.. that is a point I DO have to give to the PSP in being separate from the PS2. Even if Sony offered (or offers if they already have one and I am just dense) an MP3 player that let you play mp3s on your PS2 and store them on your harddrive.. well that would just be useless when you have a PC nearby to do the same thing. Now, with no visuals.. the PSP will go for 10 hours with your mp3s.. so, besides the comments from the Sony guy and the durability uncertainty, it does lend itself to being more portable in that situation. However.. why would you ever want to pay more than you have to for an mp3 player?
So.. the selling point isn't mp3 playability.. or movie viewing capabilities.. or games that couldn't be done anywheres else.. or the portability aspect.. then what IS the selling point? What is the point of getting it? Just think it looks cool and want to wear it around you neck like those cool people on the stairs?
