There is a huge Mexican population here in Phoenix, AZ. But do I speak spanish? No. Do I have any intention of learning Spanish? No.
They came to a country where the majority of people speak English, if they want to interact and deal with the people in this country they should learn English. If they choose not to then they should not expect me or any other American to cater specifically to them. They chose to come here, they should learn our language.
Now if one day I decide I want to make a trip to Mexico, I'll learn a little Spanish before I go, because that's the langauge spoken in Mexico. But for now, whenever someone tries to talk to me in Spanish, I simply fall back on the only three spanish words I know, "No hablo espaņol." (I don't speak Spanish.) It gets the message across just fine.
I have also recived phone calls where the person on the other end dialed the wrong number and they don't understand a word of English. In those cases I replied to them in a language that's close enough to spanish that they get the message, Italian. I just simply say, "Numero errato." (wrong number)
