Wasn't well know then. Templeman never made it public knowledge that he preferred Sammy over Dave. It was never an interesting side note until Sammy actually joined the group.
The way Gene made it sound in his story was that it was more of a behind-the-scene decision that even the band didn't know about. Like I said earlier, it was kind of a moot point, because Sammy wasn't interested in it at the time.
What is more interesting is that Templeman was so eager to replace Roth, but sided with him when he left the group and produced most of his solo stuff.
But enough thread-jacking. This is about trivia and it looks like iamtheone has the correct answer and is up to bat.
