I assume her patch cycle goes like mine:
you eat a pill everyday for 21 days (three weeks) then you have a week (where the period occures) and then you immediaetly start a new patch. If that's the case then yes, she should be protected all the time.
Feeling pityful and sick are normal side effects of the patch. If she keeps feeling sick then just have her change to another brand of patch.
I don't know if she'll start her period during the 4th week. Sometimes there can be some problems when a girl starts taking the pill. But it should go back to normal pretty quickly. I've been taking the pill for years and my period was a bit unstable at the beginning but now it's always right on time
