I bought an SACD player a couple of years ago. I was secretly hoping for SACD to be the winner at that time, and it looks like so far, I chose right. I don't have a lot of SACD material yet, but the prices are slowly coming down if I shop around for them. In spite of the technology surrounding how the SACD format works, the sound is great. (for an overview, check out the April Stereophile. Enough data to make your brain hurt.) Outside of the things one would expect like a cleaner recording, less background noise, etc, there is just something different and sweet about SACD. I would suggest to not purchase something like Frampton Comes Alive as your first SACD, or DVD-A for that matter. Choose something maybe more acoustic or even a simple jazz combo to hear that sweetness. Vocals are really natural sounding, and instruments just seem to lock in better.
While I'm not a big fan of mega-corporations, I am glad that Sony and Philips came up with this format. I know, I know, I can't make copies of it which was ceratinly part of the scheme, but the trade-off seems like dollars well spent to me.
Give DVD-A or SACD a try. For a demo, be sure to listen to the CD track, then the SACD track.
