the blackouts were the product of him going back. Because how would he "know" in his childhood that when the blackouts take place that it would be the perfect moment to go back in time? They have to be the product of his future choice of when he'd go back an try and change things.
I pretty much figured too that he thought that things would get messed up again if he let her back into his life but I just asked in case that I overlooked something in the movie.
he has memories of Kayleigh and Tommy with her mother despite that he'd never meet them? hmmm I'll have to see it again because I can't remember that
