There were blue laws in this area of PA during my lifetime. I think they're essentially still in existence, but not enforced because the Legislative bodies are unwilling to make them stronger and the fines / punishments in place are grossly out of date.
For example I think the fine for operating a place of business on Sunday is something like $100.
Don't get me wrong -- bars and nightclubs still have to get a special license to sell alcohol on Sunday (Separate from the regular license) It's just a lot less difficult now. Many of the older restaurants still close on sunday because they can't be bothered to go through the motions.
