Although I've never had a need to use, or threaten the use of, a gun on an individual, I realize that in the situation, I'd have to do what needed done to protect myself or loved ones.
I was taught from a young age, that you don't pull a gun just to intimidate someone. The rule I've been taught, is that you should ONLY brandish your weapon if you intend to use it in a deadly fashion. It's neither safe nor realistic to use a firearm with the sole thought that you'll "blow off their trigger finger" (or administer a similar non-lethal injury). It is also ridiculous to brandish a weapon if you don't feel that there is an actual need to do serious and permanent bodily harm to an individual. Often, bringing out a gun will escalate a situation that could possibly be otherwise resolved to a point where the gun is the ONLY option.
That being said, I HAVE however, had a (supposedly) unloaded handgun leveled at my head. Although I trusted the person holding the weapon not to attempt anything (they were/are young and stupid and were attempting to frighten me), I wasn't confident in their certainty as to the possible presence of live ammunition.
