I use WMP to play all my video files. It sounds to me like you don't have the proper codecs installed (I've had that problem before). What I usually do is search on google for the k-lite codec pack. With that installed, I've never run into a file I can't play. Also, you can download the real and quicktime alternatives, and play those files from a classic WMP.
