I grew up with parents that would allow me to have a beer or a glass of wine with dinner since I was about 15. If I asked for beer for the weekend they would get it for me with the understanding that I would drink resposibly (They knew I could get it off the street and thought it was better to know what I was up to). Some of my friends (whose parents forbade them from touching the stuff) would get beer and drink it as fast as they could just to get pissed. I would drink like my folks and watch these guys make idiots of themselves.
By the time a child gets to the age that they want to drink with their friends they should have at least a groundwork of understanding of the effects of drinking. I think the reactionary, not in my house, kick out the child attitude is over the top and one of the contributing factors to teenage binge drinking.
I with everyone else in that the shit hits the fan if you drink and drive.
