Bites, Bytes, Surface areas -I'm going nuts

Okay, how many bites are in a byte on CD-Rom or DVD-Rom? I know that CD-Roms have and 14 bite error correction string but I would assume that there are 8 bites in a byte (which is what I/we here at work) think is the standard.

We are attempting to find out just how many bites/bytes/charaters are on a 1 square mm peice on a CD-Rom. I am coming up with 70.088 bytes per micron (70,088 bytes per mm). This is taking into account that the information layer starts at 23 mm from center and ends at 59 mm from center.

Comments, suggestions? Sorry for the odd post, techincal papers is not one of my strong points.
