It's been going on for ages. People in europe used to kill people and throw their bodies into bogs. Incans had their elaborate human sacrifices as did the Aztecs

I'm not really sure where "these days" comes in. Because sadly, I think that it's human nature to kill one another.

According to US statistics the Murder rate is going down although it's questionably higher than it was in the 1950's.

Notice that you are far more likely to be murdered if you are a male between 18-24.
