Go around and do some research before you buy, don't trust tv commercials or secondhand info. For some, the iPod is a better fit, but I found the Karma and Zen to cater to my needs much much better.

the Karma has been on my shortlist of 'things I want but do not really NEED' for sometime.
two things that appeal to me:
0) better support - FLAC/Ogg-Vorbis/other formats I never have used or stopped using. My preferred lossy format for my webpage and few CD rips (<90% of my source material is 78/45/33 vinyls) is .MP4 but Ogg-Vorbis is higher on my list portable preference.
1) very solid design that rivals the iPod from what I have read. No personal experience with either aside from playing with an iPod at the store two years ago.
