In every male, the penis-shaft extends well within the body. When it gets hard, all of it, the part inside and outside, expands. So, the part outside gets an extra push from the part inside.
This is part of the reason why the flaccid penis size is a horrible predictor of erect penis size: you don't even see most of it when flaccid.
The difference between your case and the typical male case is just a matter of degree, not kind. You are most likely ok.
As an aside, for the surgically inclinded, there is a procedure where they snip some of the muscles (or whatever) holding up the penis-shaft inside the male body. The idea is to make a tiny bit more stick out. However, you are cutting the scaffolding that keeps it in place, so you get the result you might expect. =)
