There's still that certain something about 'em... the realism that makes them so terrifying. I don't see the dead coming to life anytime soon, but they way they portray that situation in the "Dead" movies (with the news broadcasts, etc) is just Grade A horror, IMO.
Actually, there is a movie that scared the hell out of me as a kid: Return of the Living Dead.
Now THAT movie is flat out comedy/horror and is meant to be funny, but even watching it today there's still that certain aspect of it that makes it creepy as hell.
I believe that if you took elements from Return of the Living Dead and mixed them with those of Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead, you'd have yourself one kick-ass zombie flick
