with rentals I go easy, unless I know it's a game where you don't get the full experience if you play on easy...that fucking pisses me off. so I bust out the walkthroughs for those types of rentals.
I usually just start out with normal and if the game has replay value, go back and do it with Hard. Like Resident Evil, MGS, some FPSs.
