Most people don't know this, but you're supposed to leave the back button turned on at all times. The LED on the front of the PS2 is supposed to stay red. You hold it in for 3 seconds to turn it on...same thing to turn it off. The only reason you would turn it off from the back is if you're gonna move it or something.
