Jack signs on for King Kong lead
30 March 2004

A master of monkey business he may be but few could have guessed Jack Black would land the lead role of Carl Denham in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. Starring opposite Naomi Watts' Ann Darrow, the portly prince of screen comedy will pick up where Robert Armstrong left off back in 1933 as the adventure filmmaker out to make a name for himself.

"I've been wanting to work with Jack Black ever since I saw him in High Fidelity," Jackson told the Hollywood Reporter. "He's a smart and versatile actor blessed with an abundance of energy and charm."'

All this is true but he's nevertheless an unlikely choice for a remake of what is possibly the greatest monster movie of all time. Don't get us wrong, Black's a top actor and a gifted comedian but we pictured someone a little more… well, serious. Perhaps the casting is a telling hint as to the tone of Jackson's Kong. Whatever the case, the bearded director has never given cause to doubt him in the past so we're sure he knows what he's doing.
When I first saw he was playing the lead I thought it was the Jeff Bridges' 1976 part.
It's not, though. It's from the 1933 version and he plays the filmmaker that inadvertently takes the beauty to meet the beast.

I have confidence Jack can go beyond his comedic style and pull this off.

What do you guys think?
