Poem(s) of the Week - 29 March 2004

Last week I decided I would post a poem by one of my favourite contemporary poets, the wonderful, whimsical yet insightful Wendy Cope. It's been very hard for me to choose one out of so many poems I very much love.

I urge all the male, and especially female, board-members to Google Wendy Cope and do yourself the favour of reading some of her work. I suspect our female members may like her more than the male friends (myself notwithstanding), but everyone would be the richer for spending some time with her.

So I'm going to break with habit and actually post TWO poems this week. Enjoy...

Quote:
Giving Up Smoking

There's not a Shakespeare sonnet
Or a Beethoven quartet
That's easier to like than you
Or harder to forget.
You think that sounds extravagant?
I haven't finished yet -
I like you more than I would like
To have a cigarette.

Quote:
Flowers

Some men never think of it.
You did. You'd come along
And say you'd nearly brought me flowers
But something had gone wrong.

The shop was closed. Or you had doubts -
The sort that minds like ours
Dream up incessantly. You thought
I might not want your flowers.

It made me smile and hug you then.
Now I can only smile.
But, Look, the flowers you nearly brought
Have lasted all this while.
I highly recommend Wendy Cope.
