You may want to read a book called
"Iron John" by Robert Bly. It was a pre-curser to the whole mens movement thing. Bly uses the allegory of an old folk tale to try to explain what it means to be a man in this modern age where all the rites of passage are non existant or so diluted to the point of being irrelevent.
its actually pretty good.
