Not a gift but no one has mentioned music. If it's a first date get-to-know-you type date a little music would me nice to kill the uncomfortable silences. Or, it gives you something to talk about from time to time.
From a romantic side, I would definitely bring flowers. I think roses are lame. Why not go to a qualified flourist and ask their opinion. Sure it's traditional and often done, but I betcha the parents will still be impressed. Don't go over the top, just a nice gesture.
But hey- what the hell do I know. Go with your gut.
