I paid these two points up front, completely, during the refi, and so I believe that the full cost of these points can be deductable this year. The mortgage lender recomended formating the loan this way specifically so that I could get the tax break. Do you think this is a good way to go (if I ever have to do it again)?

Close....but not quite. Since you refi'd and did not buy a new home, the points need to be spread out over the life of the loan, not all in the current year.
