Problem:

After launching Autodesk VIZ or Discreet 3ds max stand alone version (using a C-Dilla license), overall system performance decreases dramatically. After exiting VIZ or 3ds max system performance continues to degrade. The system must be rebooted.

Overview:

This behavior occurs with the following system configurations:

Windows 2000 and XP
Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition version 7.61.xxx.
C-Dilla version 3.25.10. (This version of C-Dilla ships with Autodesk VIZ 4 and 3ds max 5.)

It is possible that other versions of NAV Corporate Edition may show this symptom but this has not been confirmed. The Task Manager shows that WINLOGON.EXE memory usage and CPU utilization are unusually high. After rebooting the system, WINLOGON.EXE behaves normally until Viz, 3ds max, or the Portable License Utility are run again.

Solution:

The following are solutions and workarounds that will help with this problem.

Solution 1: Downgrade Norton AntiVirus

Downgrade Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition to a version prior to 7.61.xxx. Version 7.60.xx or lower does not cause the same system slowdown. You will need to completely remove version 7.61 prior to downgrading to an older version.
Solution 2: Disable Norton AntiVirus

Prior to running VIZ or 3ds max, turn off the Norton Anti-Virus Real Time Protection. To do this, right click on the NAV shield icon in the Windows system tray and uncheck the Enable Real Time Protection option. Be sure to turn this back on after you are finished running VIZ or 3ds max.
Solution 3: Install a different C-Dilla version

Shut down all applications.
Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Program
Remove the C-Dilla License Management System
Reboot
Download and install the different version of C-Dilla.

If you are prompted, reboot.

NOTE: This option will resolve the slowdown but there is a slight possibility you will require a reauthorization of VIZ or 3ds max.
We recommend you contact Discreet or Autodesk product support prior to choosing this option if you have any concerns or questions about installing this version of C-Dilla.
You will have to uninstall C-Dilla version 3.25.10 for all products so that C-Dilla no longer appears on the Add / Remove programs list prior to installing the older version or the update will fail.
