I almost died today.
How about a thread where we can discuss our near death experiences?
I'll start.
I was on Interstate 96 today, headed home to Grand Rapids, after a long day of substitute teaching. I have a 1993 Infiniti J30, rear wheel drive, with tires that had gotten pretty bald since I moved to colder climates, and got stuck all of the time.
I was going 75 mph, passing a slow moving van on a curve, in slushy weather, when I realized the car wasn't responding to me. I couldn't turn the wheel, I was hydroplaning at 70mph straight into the ditch. My life didn't flash before my eyes, in fact, I"m not even sure what happened, all I know is that I tried to brake, and steer the wheel so that I didn't hit the lane of oncoming traffic. I slid straight through the grassy median, almost into the traffic going the other way, and then did straightened the car out, and came to rest on the embankment on the side of the road I started out on.
I got out of the car, thought about crying, decided not to, instead looked at the car. It appeared to be okay. I walked up the road to see the mile marker I had just passed, and called 911. I almost broke down on the phone with the 911 operator, but she kept me talking. She called me a wrecker, I called my dad to let him know what happened, and got a credit card number for the wrecker.
The truck showed up, and pulled me out of the ditch, I drove 55 in a 70 the rest of an hour back to Grand Rapids, then spent the rest of the night fielding calls from relatives.
The car's fine, I'm fine,
It's just now hitting me that I could be dead right now.
Has anyone else been in this situation? Please share your stories in this thread.
