It's usually really difficult to tell which phase the signal is in when it comes out of any amplifier. Every one is different. RJ has it right: which ever sounds best is ideal. Turn it all on or all off. In some instances if the signal is way out of phase, you'll hear very little bass. In this case, of course, turn it the other way!!!

This can also be used as a tuning device. If you can find out what the low end cut off is for your main speakers, you can set this frequency to be near that. The idea is to get this sub to integrate with your whole sound system, and not just stick out and saying to the world, "HEY - I'M A SUBWOOFER! AM I LOUD OR WHAT?" Any frequency below 100 will increase the chances of the sub being difficult to locate by hearing alone.
