hummm but you can still buy 40 gig drives everywhere, so that may not be true....
but a chance the drive is dieing, or just a POS... now that its wiped put it in your box and see how it does....
though i have never really seen one slow down b4 dieing, jsut ones that are slow as compaired to new drives....
