Personally, I'm in the "lid down" group. With the lid down, nothing gets dropped in accidently. To me, an open bowl looks rude. You took the time to close the door to the bathroom, right?

Exactly. Just like taking a glass out of the cupboard and not closing the door or not capping the milk when you return it to the frige. It has a lid for a reason. I'm not just for the seat being down, but the lid being closed as well. It just looks cleaner and neater, especially true if you haven't cleaned the loo in a while.
