I'd get him started with QBasic (Basic is a little too far back) and then move to Vbasic. Those are good foundation starters.
QBasic is a good introduction (simple one) to programming.
I suck at programming, but QBasic seemed simple to me, and helped me out on understanding the basic rules and concepts.
