Unlike most "Irish" posters here, I really am Irish. :-)

And yes I tend to go out and celebrate because I live overseas (Sydney). Does that mean getting drunk? I'm afraid so. Say what you want, but we like to have a few beers and Irish social life revolves around the pub.

Back home, St Patrick's day is, officially, a religious holiday but don't kid yourself. It's not as if droves of people go off to Mass or anything. St Patrick's Day was an American invention after all... :-) The whole parade thing etc.

We now have parades in Ireland (since the 50's or 60's I think), and most people who go do so to bring their kids. It's not such a big deal back home.

And, for the record, no one in Ireland ever says things like "Kiss me, I'm Irish" or "May the road rise with you" (ARRGFGHH!!!), or "May God hold you in the palm of his hand" (GRRR!!)... or any other of that syrupy Hollywood Oirish crap.

The most you'll hear is "Cheers" or if there's a visitor from overseas we MIGHT say "Slainte".
