I had good luck with Rislone. You run a quart of it in place of a quart of regular oil, then change the oil about 1000 miles later.
My T-Bird had some valve noise when I'd first start it up. I figured it was due to sludge from the previous owner's poor maintenance/cheap oil. I ran some Rislone in it for a while, and that solved the problem. I've been using Castrol GTX and Purolator filters ever since. Now, 2.5 years and 30k miles later, I still don't have any valve noise whatsoever.
