Sorry Billy Ocean, but I haven't done a triathlon yet. It is on my agenda and I have been running over the winter in preparation. I haven't swam since College 9 years ago, and I was only a breast stroker and a 100 m freestyler.
My advice, though I shouldn't give you an opinion since I didn't do a race yet, (but noticed there is a strong probability that you won't get a response to your question on this forum anytime soon considering the esoteric nature of our sport backgrounds) is to stay off the back and swim within the wake of the group. There is a lot of kicking and punching that goes on from what I witnessed at races. That's what I plan on doing so I don't panic and blow my heart rate.
On the bike is where you can pick your way through the stragglers if your strong and connect with a chase group if your lucky. That's what I plan on doing so I can get my ego back where it belongs (On the ROAD).
I'll say nothing on the run...not my forte...just want to survive that.
Take it for what it's worth, but I'm going in as a complete rookie and I have no worry about the outcome. I just want to finish in the middle numbers.
Good luck dude.
Pom
