That's a dangerous falsehood. Even with a condom, there are several diseases that can be transmitted during sex. Bodily fluid exchange is pretty much guaranteed to occur if you romp around, and it's pretty safe to assume that anything she/he has, you'll get.
Just be safe. And get some condoms; they're free everywhere. Hospitals, health centers (especially college health centers), and high schools hand them out. If you declare that you want a condom, health professionals will make sure you get them.
