To be more specific with the genes:
Everyone is harboring many dangerous resesive mutations in thier genes that they have inheritied. The thing is that since those mutations are random, odds are that noone outside your family has them and since the trait is recessive then they feel no ill effects. The problem is that if people in the family, that have the mutation, mate then thier offspring have a 1/4 chance of getting a mutation that will screw them up big-time. 1/4 chance per gene times the number of ressesive genes that are dangerous = high probablity of messed up children.
