What you need is the
Tabbed Browsing Extensions. They provide you with a mich finer level of control over how tabs behave. Activate 'Single Window Mode' and all links that would open in new windows will instead open in new tabs.

Firebird Help site is a great resource for skins and extensions for Firebird.
