<a name="dolphin">Project Dolphin - Join the TFP Typing team!!

Okay, this is just for fun. No requirements on your part. This is just a way to see how much we are typing as a collective. No prizes, no awards, some recognition

THE PROGRAM - It is Project Dolphin. A small program lives on your computer and counts how many times your fingers push the keys of your keyboard. It does not log what keys you press. It only counts that a key was pressed. Any key. So relax, no spying going on here.

WHERE - http://www.project-dolphin.nl

WHY - Because we are fun people who are always happy to have some cheap way of seeing who types the most, thats why.

Here is the TFP Team join link - http://www.project-dolphin.nl/member...n.php?tid=1318

The site may be a bit confusing, but feel free to post questions here. I'll try to answer as much as I can figure out.

windows only so far, sorry mac and linux users

2) Download installer from the "Download" link
3) Install and run
4) Register a name through the link either on the site, or from the link in the program (if paranoid - Any email. it really doesn't matter, because they don't check)
5) Sign in through the program (put in user name and password)

To join team TFP -
1) Log-in through the site
2) Do either one of these
2A) Go here - http://www.project-dolphin.nl/member...n.php?tid=1318
-OR-
2B) Once logged in, go to "Teams", "Add Team", and search for "TFP", and click "ADD/JOIN"

And you are on team TFP!!

Not really an expert on it, but that's what I've been led to believe it it. The SETI@home network is run a university that sponsers it. What people do is download the main program, and install it, and you can have it run all the time, or have it run when you aren't using the computer, using the spare computing cycles for something effective. What the SETI team hopes is that if lots and lots of people do this, they can break down all the work, so instead of having one computer do ALL the work, they get thousands and thousands of computers searching through the data.

<a name="folding">Folding @ Home

Just a reminder, all, we had/have a folding @ home team up and going.

Quote:
What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

How can you help? You can help our project by downloading and running our client software. Our algorithms are designed such that for every computer that joins the project, we get a commensurate increase in simulation speed.

What have we done so far? We have had several successes. You can read about them on our Science page, Results section, or go directly to our press and papers page.

feel free to join up, and help out!
