target shooting 22lr vs 17 hmr
 

I am buying a new rifle to target shoot and to teach my 2 girls to shoot.
I cannot decide between the 22 lr, 22mag and the 17 hmr but the rifle will be a ruger 77/17 or 77/22. I think i like the 17 best but is it worth the diffence in price.

Just go with 22 lr, if only because of price.

what ranges are we talking here?

if its 50yards, stick with the .22lr...

if its more like 100, the 17 starts to look better as it drops less...


but with 2 little girls, cost is going to be an issue, and you can get a brick of .22lr for 10 bucks...

Will start at 25 yards then 50 with iron sights
When they have those down pat 100 yards with a scope
my girls are 13 and 17.
The 17 year old hunts deer with me and has good basic skills, will need 100 yard scope practice
My 13 year old is just about to take her firearms course (in april) and has not shot yet.
The cost of shells is not a big issue.

My advice: get a 22 LR for them to practice on with iron sights until they're proficient at 25 and 50 yards... once they are, have em prove it to you, and as a reward, do the .17.

Or... you could also try out the new .17 mach 2... which would only require a rebarreling on the 77/22 or rebarreling with an action/spring kit on the 10/22... it's a viable option, anyway. The .17hm2 is a 22lr case necked down to .17, and has a pretty high muzzle velocity... .17 hmr would still be *better* at 100 yds, but with hm2 you could have a pretty versatile gun.....

*edit* added info: the 17 hm2, once properly installed via action kit on a 10/22, is actually a pretty nice choice. There are a few people that can get .5 inch groups at 100 yards with em...

22lr for price along. If you are going to go long range, go for the 17HMR. Then again, if you are going to go for 100m+ you should just go 223 or something.

I was picking up brass after shooting at my local indoor range and got some 17HMR cases mixed in with my stuff. While sorting it I came across one fired 17 HMR shell that had split vertically in mid case. The case seemed thin and brittle. Maybe it was just a bad round but maybe not.

I DECIDED TO BUY A 204 RUGER AND GET INTO RELOADING TO SAVE MONEY ON BULLETS, IT SEEMS LIKE A BETTER CHOICE BECAUSE I WANT TO HAVE FUN ALSO SHOOTING WITH MY GIRLS.

Now you can spend your well-saved money on that new capslock key. ;)

Stick with the 22lr. It will serve you well at this stage.

what i ment to say is i bought a 22lr bolt action for my girls,and i think i'll get a 204 ruger for myself . does anybody have experience with the 204 ruger or is there a better centerfire for 150+yards
