Bulk Ammo

i am thinking about getting a varmit/target rifle in .223 because it's cheaper to shoot (well this one actually). i was looking around and found some cheat prices on bulk ammo (1000 rounds for $150.00). i was just wondering if anybody had any dealings with it? i know its not going to be good target ammo but for just "shooting" i thought it might be ok.

or should i say the heck with it and get a .308?

just wanted some feedback. thanks

are we talking Wolf ammo here?

if we are, its best to order a small lot first, and shoot it as quickly as you can to see how your particular rifle reacts to the coating on the shell casings...

yea i found some wolf and federal. the federal is a little more expensive though. i'm mainly just wanting something cheap and "decently" accurate at 100 yards or less.

If ( and this is a BIG if ) your rifle likes it, Wolf will work fairly well. I'd reccoment Barnaul or Silver Bear myself; same price range, better manufacture and heavier bullets. Barnaul has a 63-grainer that hits like a freight train ( for a .223, that is ) and is about $150/1,000 rounds. Plus, being HP, it'll perform well on varmints.

Plain and simple, some guns just don't like some ammo. Buy some small lots, test them out, then buy what works the best.

thanks for the info. im still indecisive between a .223 or .308. shooting and reloading my 7mm is getting expensive and i want something cheaper. 300 yards is pretty much the max distance we shoot at and i just cant make up my mind. my buddies shoot 22-250's and 220 swifts but sometimes the wind drifts that little bullet.

can you reload that bulk brace? i heard that some of it you couldn't.

Several things to keep in mind with this rifle:

1. It has a twist rate of 1/9". This means it will be better suited for 62grain ammo than 55grain. 55grain will work and is fine for casual shooting, but 62grain is better. Finding 62grain in bulk shouldn't be a problem.

2. Find out how this rifle is chambered. It states it is chambered for .223. Some manufacturers will use .223 and 5.56 interchangeably, as do some ammo manufacturers. But, if it is a true .223 chamber, shooting 5.56 ammo in it can cause overpressure issues. And, if it is a match .223 chamber (i.e. tight), this can be more of an issue. (You will have the same issue between a true .308 chamber and 7.62 ammo.)

3. Wolf and other Russion ammo is usually laquered and steel cased. The laquer can build up in the chamber as you shoot more and cause extraction issues.

See this page:
http://www.fulton-armory.com/556-vs-223-Chambers.htm

it is written for AR15s, but the information regarding headspace applies to any .223 vs. 5.56 discussion.

i was going to give an update on what i decided to do. after thinking on everything for a few days i decided to just go with the .308. that way i can deer hunt with it if i want to. and also a good friend said he had several boxes of lake city match ammo that i could use to start off with. besides i have a reloading table full of powder that needs to be used. heres the setup i'm going to go with... Gun should be here next week. i really like that third stud for a bipod. Scope which i got in today. for the money it's really pretty nice and clear even on 40x. still haven't decided on base and rings yet. i've used leupold forever but thought about trying burris this time. any suggestions? when i get everything together i'll post a couple pics and the results. thanks for all the info guys.

good choice on the .308 :)

an added benefit is that its much more effective on people than the 5.56 ;)

well ziadel thats true but i don't plan on needing to snipe anyone anytime soon. :D
