what is a good pocketknife?
 

i'm looking for a new pocketknife... i got a gerber mini paraframe fine edge right now

does anyone have suggestions on knives and where to get them at?

CRKT makes a nice one callled a K.I.S.S. - its a framelock that should go for less than 40 bucks......

What do you want it for. If it is for self defense, then what you have now is fine. If it is for cutting things other than humans, you want something with a thin blade and good handle. Try a swiss army knife. The large ones with the contour handles are really nice.

I carry a Spyderco Cricket serrated, which is small, lightweight, nice handle and a hell of a box opener as well as working well as an X-Acto knife.

I carry an old Barlow knife that my grandfather gave me...what?...30 years ago? He carried it when he was but a boy. It has served me very well for all these years.

I just went to look that one up, looks very nice. I've seen it (or perhaps knockoffs) in stores, but I was quite unsure about the exposed blade. Does it really not catch on anything? Is it prone to accidentally opening? I carry my knife in my front pocket, and really don't want to get stabbed.

It isn't all that small but it's practical... I carry a leatherman with all the tools I need.

My current folder is a Benchmade Osbourne 940 SBT - Like the image below but with a black teflon coated blade.

The Smith and Wesson S.W.A.T knives are great, small, rugged, and have a great look. They are also very affordable.

as to the CRKT kiss, yes they stay shut, and do not stab you, according to the three customers of mine that I see on a regular basis who carry them daily- the cheap knockoff that look similar ARE A BAD IDEA- no name factories in china and pakistan can do a fair to midling linerlock, if you know how to pick em and check them before you buy em, but they have yet to do a framelock that I would want to carry, for fear of it harming me- they arent up to the precise engineering required yet- Crkts work based on the close tolerences and so while they are about as minimal as you get, all the ones that I have seen are OK blades to own......

PUMA simple yet very well balanced and holds a great edge.

I just checked one out at Eastern Mountain Sports, and I'm still not comfortable with the exposed blade in my pocket. It seemed too easy to open, and I get the feeling that I'll cut myself with it. On to other blades...

I have the Gerber Mini Paraframe. It's nice, and it does a good job as a utility knife. Min is half serrated, and half plain. I would reccomend it as a utilty knife, may not be top of the line, but it does the job

I've had nothing but good experiences with knives made by Spyderco. Very good quality for the price. Very high "coolness factor" in my book. Comumbia River Knife and Tool is good for the money, as long as you check out the knife before you purchase it. Some are put together much better than others. I'd also recommend knives by Kershaw and Benchmade. Smith & Wesson knives are alright, and cheap if you get them at Big-5. Again, check out the knife before you buy it, some are put together rather well, some are pieces of shit.

I just checked the spyderco site at www.spyderco.com and they've got some pretty good deals on small folders in the "specials" section.

Me, I go with a leatherman. Not what you are looking for though. More of a pocket toolkit than pocket knife.

I'm new to this field, but I currently own a nice Swiss Army Knife.

However, I keep it at my desk as that is where I do most of my work and where I most likely use it.

My question is:
1. What do people usually use their pocket knife for?
2. Do people experience awkwardness or diffuclty "wearing" or carrying around their knife? I used to carry mine but found it a bit heavy in my pocket. I prefer to travel light. Plus all the metal detectors and other problems these days.

As for self defense, what ever happened to the simple switchblade or butterfly knife? Actually, I find that in this day in age, it's probably better (if you can get the proper permit) to carry a handgun.

Has anyone tried like a "utility belt" or something? I figure, pocket knife, cell phone, keys, what-have-you. Or has anyone used one of those keychain pocket knives or are they useless?

I forgot that switchblades/butterfly knoves were illegal. Or does it vary from state to state?

Really, it varies from officer to officer. There are fed, state, and local laws regarding blades but many of these laws contain vagaries about the force required to expose the cutting edge. Once interpretation begins the outcome rests on how well they like you.

I have a plastic-handled spyderco and also a leatherman super tool. Both are nice, the spyderco for looks and the leatherman for function. Of course, I never usually carry either of them so it is a moot point.

Jorgelito: Fits very well the way I wear it. Put in pocket, sliding the clip over the outside of the pocket. Slide to rear. I don't even notice it's there. Keychain knives: You get what you pay for. Spyderco and Buck make some decent ones. Dunno about the utility belt....I just keep everything in my pockets.

i own a kershaw onion leek, it's so wonderful i feel naked without one. It does have the "safety assit" which may or may not be illega in your area, but its a good cheap kife that looks hot. the 'click' is alo pretty satisfying of a sound.

What's wrong with those Swiss Pocket knives with all the cool gadgets? I used to backpack and used one all the time.

I've had quite a few pocket knives over the years, from Leatherman to small Spydercos. The one I'm most happy with though is as boring as this:

I've had it for 15 years +. Great quality steel, lightweight and has all functions I really need.

They are too thick for me. I carry in my front pocket, along with my keys and contact lens eyedrops; also, it is pretty rare that I need a tool other than the knife, and if I do, I have a Leatherman Juice in my briefcase. My $0.02, anyway.
